Could you point me in the right direction towards gutting SDL to use as only an input library?.

Just thought of it. There is an "input only" library:

I would think it may be a fair amount of work to trim SDL down to just input handling...

Open input does'nt do windows joysticks from what I can tell though.

You may want to look at their 0.2.4 branch. I believe it does Windows joysticks, but I may be wrong. Worst case is you are back to gutting SDL...

OIS does'nt seem to work very well for me, I can't seem to get it to work. I gave up on it already.

Well I would use direct input if it was'nt a Windows and Linux game.
I'll try out open input and see if it will work at all.

You could use DirectInput on window, and 'whatever' on linux
