So a friend and I intend to make a game. We're both great artists neither of us know anything about coding. So I've taken on the onus of learning. Frankly, I intend to learn as a I go. Optimistically, we intend the thing to take about two years; realistically, we're prepared for more.

We have a well thought out flexible game system, to compromise for lack of coding knowledge. The gameplay can either be complex or basic depending on our needs, either way, we intend to lean heavily on style and story.

Be that as it may, for the past week I've been a bit overwhelmed with the systems out there. So I come here for some seasoned advice.

What we plan to do is make an RPG/Strategy game in the final fantasy tactics flavor. Lots of 2d characters and placeables, with 3d for modestly sized levels/maps, maybe a few placeables.

I do plan on making the mechanics of the game a bit sophisticated. Interactions between objects are intended to be moderately complex. So I do conceed I'll need to learn me code. But all still falling under the sphere of basic-mediocre coding skill.

Long story short, While I learn code and development I will need two things I'm sure 1) A dev community to lean on in times of duh and 2) a neophyte friendly engine to get started on.

Please read the many other threads in this forum about getting started for beginners. For instance, this one.
