I would like to know if anoyone can recomend a good c++ book for begginers or something to point me in that direction? i am an artist who had his first taste of scripting in one of my classes. we had a group project and none of use knew how to script. we had to use unreal 2 and design 3 working lvls with our own characters and weapons. since i was the character designer and animater i was apointed to make them work. the more i played with the scripting ( more like modding to be exact) the more i got into it. bringing my characters in game and seeing them in action was exciting and now i want more......

Is there any reason you picked C++? I wouldn't necessarily recommend C++ out of the blocks. Maybe if you could give us a good idea of what you want to accomplish?

Are you looking to mod games? If so, any specific one? Are you looking to create something from scratch? I would want to know more before recommending a language or a book to read. C++ may be a waste of your time depending on what you want to do.

good question. i would like to create my own rpg games like flyff (just love the style and its mmo so it maybe out of the question ) or stuff like final fantasy, DND, Knights of the old republic or RTS games from scratch. not the engine but the whole story line and art work...... after thinking about what u asked i would like to learn enough to understand what is going on and where i can edit the code. if there is a mod where i can use to create games like these that would be great but all i have to use is unreal at the moment and have no clue on how to edit it to be like an rpg style game. i chose c++ cause i thought that was the language for games. im glad u asked me those simple but not so simple questions. i need to fine tune what i really want to do.....as of now mods thx

Like Nodlehs, why C++? Coming from scripting, I would recommend you look into Python or Lua. (The latter is a scripting language popular in the gaming industry.)

You can start a career in game development via modding, but from what I have seen, it's slightly trickier in the "middle" than just coding an actual game.

You basically have to walkthrough learning how to get from simple game "mutations" to get up to being able to do total conversions. The nice part is that this can be done for free and engines like Unreal3 have a big technical following that can help you along.

But, when you get to your first total conversion, licensing is a potential killer for an indie. You usually have to try to win a contest, where the prize is a basically a license and a company like Epic works with you to make it happen. It becomes a mix of talent, luck and politics/networking. If you can't line up those three, you'll never break through.
